Little League Age 9–10
9 and 10-year-olds are usually ready for Auckland-wide competition in 10U (Minor League) — for most players this age, 10U is the expected home. For those ready for a bigger challenge, 12U (Major League) becomes available too — the grade every young Kiwi baseballer dreams about, with a real pathway toward the Little League World Series and its Majors final broadcast live on ESPN to millions of people around the world.
Brand new to the game?
A player who’s genuinely new to baseball at this age can still start in in-house club baseball if that feels like the better fit — though by 9 and 10 it’s less common, and most new players are ready to jump straight into 10U.
Most players
10U is the expected grade at this age — 6 innings (minimum 4), around 2 hours, still played with the Flexiball. Coaches and umpires can also move the pitching rubber closer for players still developing control, giving 10U genuine flexibility to suit where a player’s actually at.
More experienced?
Players with a season or two under their belt can also play 12U for tougher competition. 10U plays in the morning and 12U in the afternoon, so it’s genuinely possible to play both grades on the same Saturday without a scheduling clash — extra baseball, extra challenge, no giving up their home grade. 10U games run up to 2 hours; 12U games also run up to 2 hours.
The All-Stars pathway
From Little League age 10, players become eligible for selection to the 12U (Majors) All-Stars team — Auckland’s flagship representative side. At age 10 it takes a genuinely exceptional player to make the squad over the 11 and 12 year olds also competing for a spot, but it is possible. The pathway runs through three stages: win the New Zealand District to become New Zealand Little League, win the Asia-Pacific & Middle East Regional to become Asia-Pacific Little League, then head to the Little League World Series itself in Williamsport, Pennsylvania — the Majors division final is broadcast live on ESPN to millions of viewers around the world. The Regional has mostly been hosted in Hwaseong, South Korea in recent years. (At Little League age 9, trials aren’t open yet — that starts the following year, at age 10.)
